Winter Steelhead Report and Lower Sac forecast

We've had an unusually long window to fish for Winter Steelhead this year. With precipitation amounts way below average, the rivers have stayed fishable for much of the Winter. As the rivers start to drop out and get very clear, it presents some new challenges but still allows us the opportunity to get after these fish. Only a few more days chasing these migratory fish around and then it's back to the Lower Sac for the Spring time goodness. With the warmer weather patterns we've had - we're expecting the hatches of Caddis, PMDs and March browns to be taking off by the first week of March. Flows are very low on the Sac right now, which opens up some great opportunities to jump out of the boat and walk/wade...

Sacramento River and Trinity River Fly Fishing Report

The Lower Sac is still sitting at 4k cubes - ideal for winter trout fishing. It has been a very good option for scratching the winter trout itch. Mid-day hatches of Baetis and various other Mayflies (March Browns included) have been getting the fish grabby. We are only a month or so away from seeing the first big (Brachycentrus) Caddis hatches of the year. If you don't know - these hatches during the first warm spell in March can make for some ridiculously good trout fishing. Both nymph and dry fly fishing will be available in early March. We've had some pretty good days fishing for Winter Steelhead over the past few weeks. The Trinity is starting to show off some of the late-run wild fish that are extremely fun and...

Lower Sacramento River Fishing Report

Flows on the Sac are still down at 5K cubes.. This should be the norm for a while until we get a little precipitation. Speaking of which, there is virtually zero of that in the extended forecast. We've been enjoying the clear 65 degree days but it's time for the high pressure on the coast to move and let some weather in. The fishing remains good but the windows have narrowed a bit. The baetis hatches are waning but still sparking the bite in the middle of the day. Don't expect any crazy fishing in the morning right now. We've seen some real quality fish on the Sac recently. Winter Steelhead will be showing up soon on some of the other venues.. MORE IMAGES FROM THE RIVER HERE ...

Lower Sacramento River Fishing Report

Not much has changed on the TroutFactory that is the Lower Sac. The fish have gotten a little quicker and the hatches have thinned out a bit but the fishing remains good to very good. It pays to have a perfect drift in the right spot, with a ninja quick hookset. There is a substantial difference in the success for those who do. The wind was a pain in the ass the past few days - makes mends and drifts a little tougher to achieve. The forecast is CLEAR for the foreseeable future.. that's nice and all but it'd be good to get a few little wet systems to move through soon. More from the river HERE.  ...

Lower Sacramento River Fishing Report

The Lower Sacramento River CONTINUES to pump out consistently good fishing. The past few days have been exceptional. Flows are down to 5k cubes and should stay there for the foreseeable future. We've been gettin' out of the boat and wade fishing quite a bit too, which is a really good change of pace. Even had the chance to throw the dry fly to rising fish on the days the Baetis come off in numbers. The last few weeks have been a prime example of how dynamic this river can be. Lower Sacramento River Fishing Report

The fishing on the Sac remains good to really good most days. The Baetis hatches have been coming off like clockwork and can convince the bigger fish in the river to come out from hiding. We've had some stellar days over the past few weeks and expect this trend to continue. Flows are down to 5k which opens up even more opportunities to get out of the boat and wade fish. If the stars align, Dry fly fishing can happen this time of year too. The Trinity River was good to us all last week too. Small pulses of color and flow from the tribs gets the fish moving and can make for some damn good windows. Checkout more images from the Rivers here.  ...

Lower Sacramento River Report

The Lower Sac has been phenomenal this past week. Heavy hatches of BWOs is driving the fishing most days. Rain or shine it has been really, really good out here. Very few other boats around on most week days too. We have been getting out of the boat a fair amount and wading some of the skinny stuff since the flows have dropped down to 6k cubes. We've even had the chance to throw the dry fly in some spots.. The dry fly game this time of year does exist - it can be very technical and requires above average skill though. Looking forward to a few more Winter Salmon showing up and contributing some huevos to the trout's diet soon. More snaps from the river here. ...

Lower Sacramento River Report

Last week was pretty exceptional all around. The Lower Sac gave us some ridiculously good days. The boys I had on Saturday lost count of how many doubles they had.. The BWO hatches have been ginormous.. and the XL trout have been coming out from hiding to take part in the feast.  I spent a day guiding both the Klamath and Trinity last week also and had some great Steelhead fishing on both rivers. There are good numbers of fish spread out in both rivers. As long as conditions stay favorable, we should have some solid Steelhead fishing in November and December. Lower Sacramento River Report

The Sac has given us some really good days mixed with some mediocre days over the past week. Fish are EXTREMELY fast on the grab right now. They're not giving you much time at all set set the hook which has made for some challenging fishing at times. That being said we're still getting a lot of opportunities and fish better than 20" are hitting the net every day. Word is there are a lot of adult salmon down in the delta right now - this could mean a good winter push of Salmon and a big egg bite for us in November and December. We're looking forward to see what happens the coming days and weeks. More images from the river here.  ...
