Water

Here is a pretty good website on Water in California. A lot of issues in "mismanagement" come to light during these low water years. Follow THIS LINK and educate yourself a little bit about water in our state and how our fisheries are being impacted. I'm still blown away by how many "fishing people" I talk to that are clueless about the source of the rivers they spend so much time fishing. Some people don't even know that the Sacramento River flows to the Pacific Ocean. Read up. This fish just recently migrated from the Pacific Ocean: ...

Lower Sac Update

The Lower Sacramento River remains a great trout fishing option this summer. Recently, we've been seeing both quality and quantity up and down the river, from downtown Redding to Cottonwood. Despite the lack of hatches the fish have been eating well throughout the day. Fish don't seem to be too keyed in on any specific bug, it's just important that you put those bugs in the right spot. Not many drift boats out on the river recently either. Flows are currently sitting at 7,500 cfs and are projected to drop down to 3,500 cfs by October 1. This is actually a really good thing as it will reduce the amount of Salmon redds that will be left high and dry like last season. You don't have to wait until the "Egg...

Lower Sac Report

The Lower Sacramento River remains a great summer option. There were a few days earlier this week where we had to work a bit harder for 'em than usual but overall the river has been kicking out slugs on a daily basis. When you can take beginners out and have them each lose count of how many fish they land, you know you have a special river. Year 'round, you have to love this powerhouse of a trout fishery. Bob from Fresno put 3 fish over 20" in the net last week.. Click the image below for more images ...

North State Report

Fishing in Northern California has been damn good lately. The Lower Sac remains a great option. A half day float is just about perfect during these hot summer days. The fish have been eating most consistent from mid morning through the early afternoon. The evening Caddis hatches have been making for some good dry fly fishing opportunities as well. Day time temps have been reaching triple digits recently, but the cold clear water flowing from Shasta Lake has kept our trout happy and eating well. Some of the hottest fish we hook on the Sac come during the summer months. I spent a few days recently taking some folks into the Pit River and we've been having a blast. Fishing has been a bit scratchy in the middle of the afternoon,...

Steady.

The Lower Sacramento River has been very consistent for the past few weeks. BIG hatches of PMDs and Summer Caddis have had fish chowing with reckless abandon during certain windows throughout the day. Also, the last hour of light has been giving up some really good dry fly fishing. When the Caddis start to pop during that last hour of light, it's like somebody flipped a switch and it seems almost every fish in the river is poking it's nose through the surface grabbing Caddis. There have been a lot of hot fish hooked in the past week. Get up here while the gettin' is good. Check out some more Lower Sac photos here Big hatches at last light = Big Trout ...

Upper and Lower Update

The Upper Sacramento River has been fishing very well as of late. The flows are low and the big hatches are just starting. The abundance of Golden Stones and Salmonflies has had the fish looking up most of the day, so prospecting with a good dry/dropper setup has stuck a lot of fish. The water is already getting very warm on the lower end of the river so be super careful while handling and releasing your fish. As the water temps increase, playing a fish to death becomes more likely. Tread lightly. Click Image to check out more USac Photos Not a whole lot has changed on the Lower Sac recently. Fishing remains good to VERY GOOD for anglers who can mend, get that oh so important "dead drift" and set a...
