Louisiana Reds

After a busy Fall season of guiding, I took a good friend up on an offer to head down south and chase some big bull Redfish in the Louisiana Marsh. This is the time of year when the big Reds from the Gulf follow the shrimp and crab into the shallow marshy flats to chow down. Strictly a sight-fishing game - if you cant see em, ya aint gonna catch em.. it's as simple as that. A series of conditions have to align for it all to happen. Sunlight, clean water, tides, and wind are the major factors. We were lucky to have primo conditions for 3 of the 6 days. The fishery down there is pretty darn special - I was absolutely blown away by the vastness of the...

Winter Transitions

It's been a while since my last report and quite a bit has changed up here in the underwater world. The smell of decaying salmon is strong along the Lower Sac these days, signaling the end of the big Fall spawn. The rainbows up in town have slowed their gorging process and have been acting pretty snobby this past week. There is good fishing to be had in the upper stretches - it's just much less consistent (and much more unpredictable) than it was earlier this month. The fish are transitioning from the redds to hanging out in more of the winter water spots. When the fish are eating, they have been pretty quick - so veteran anglers are putting bigger numbers of fish to the net than the rookies....

Fall Fly Fishing is on Cruise Control

Fishing here in Northern CA has been very good this Fall. I have been on the Lower Sac primarily and have spent a few days up on the Klamath recently. The Lower Sac is sitting just above 6k cubes - and the kings continue to pour in and occupy the spawning gravel. With such a large run of kings this year (and fish still on their way up), you should expect the goodness on the Sac to last well into winter this year. There has been no lack of boat pressure out there recently but if you fish the right water, with the right stuff you will get em good.. regardless of the pressure. As soon as the Trinity turns on and the weather gets cooler, most of these boats...

ROctober fishing rolls on..

The fishing in the North State remains VERY good. The Lower Sac continues to produce from top to bottom. Multiple Steelhead are being hooked every time i've been on the lower river.. these fish are super hot and don't always make it to the net. As salmon continue to occupy the spawning gravel up top, the rainbows continue to gorge on the protein filled eggs. Here are some recent snapshots from the Sac: The Klamath is just getting going as well. Fishing has been pretty good up there recently, with good numbers of fish being hooked each trip. Mix in a few smaller Kings and Jacks and it makes for a pretty fun day of fishing. - Klamath River - ...

As good as it gets..

The Lower Sacramento River is fishing as good as I have ever seen it. The Kings are in full spawn mode in the top of the river, we have been hooking good numbers of steelhead in the lower river, a lot of double hookups from top to bottom, I even watched 8 consecutive casts hook fish today. ¬†With the abundance of Kings still in the bay and on their way up, the egg drop should last well into November. I just had a group bail the weekend of October 12th and 13th. If you are at all interested in a trip during prime time, get in touch soon. These are my only available days left this month.. Come experience The Sac at her best.  ...

Fall fishing has ARRIVED

Well boys and girls, the Fall fishing in Northern California has arrived. We got a good dose of much needed rain up here today - aside from not being able to let my dog in the muddy backyard to take a leak, I was happy to see the sky finally open up after a long, hot summer. The days are getting shorter and the nights cooler. Kings are starting to pile into the upper stretches of the river and are already digging redds, making for some giddy, grabby rainbows. We have put some great fish in the net this past week.. and it will only get better from here on out. ...

They’re on their way..

It's that time of year when the Kings start making their way into our valley rivers. The Department of Fish and Game is projecting and even larger Salmon run than we saw last year. This is excellent news to us fly anglers. For those of you who got to experience the big egg drop last season, DON'T MISS IT THIS FALL, as we should see an even stronger run this season. We are only a few weeks out from fantastic trout and steelhead fishing on the Lower Sac! HERE is a short news clip highlighting this years Salmon run. ...

Saying goodbye to Alaska

I just finished up my short guiding stint in Alaska. It feels like just yesterday I was unloading my gear from the Navajo at the runway.. now i'm sitting in a dinky hotel room in Anchorage awaiting my flight back to California. With only one day off over the past five weeks I am happy to be sleeping in past 5:00am. I am lucky to have experienced this special place again, while I am still young and able to walk about the rivers, through the trees and over the tundra with ease. Working in Alaska is not something that I will be able to do forever.. and I think this season I really realized that. That realization has made me appreciate it all a little more than in years past....

Back in Alaska

I've been back up at the Lodge for almost two weeks now. It sure is nice to be back up here with the boys working long days again. The cooler, wet weather has been a perfect change of pace from the hot temps in the Northern California Valley. I don't usually feel this way, but climbing into the waders every morning has felt good. I've spent most of my time on Upper American Creek, Moraine Creek and the Kulik. All three rivers have been fishing well as of the last two weeks. The sockeye are in the middle of full spawn over on the American and we have been catching wads of char and leopard rainbows over there.. The Spawn just kicked off a week ago on the Moraine which...
