Lower Sacramento River Fishing Report

Well, it might sound like a broken record but the Lower Sac remains lights out good. There haven't been many lulls in the fishing at all here as of late. I had the chance to guide a fella who grew fishing the river with his grandfather and father. He had some really neat stories of the "good ol' days". He's pushing 70 years old now and has hundreds of days floating and fishing the Lower Sac. Today was the "most productive" day he had ever had out here.. PMDs are still the main attraction. There are more and more Caddis starting to come off and that will only continue with warmer days in the forecast. Don't forget that summertime is a good time to get the dry fly rod out...

Lower Sacramento River Report

The River has fished very well over the past few weeks. A lot of my sports have been spoiled by the ridiculously good fishing. Usually, the drift has to be perfect and hook sets have to be quick to have success out here. Recently, the fish have been damn near hanging themselves, eating with reckless abandon. Expect the bite to stay consistent through the month of May. Everything has been on the menu recently.. Caddis, PMDs, Baetis, Yellow Sallies, Big Stones, Little Stones, Eggs.. Pick the right patterns in those flavors, put em in the right spot and you'll have a hell of a good time out there. My next open days are: May 17-19, 25-27, 30-31. Mid-Month Report

Per usual, the Lower Sac has continued to give it up on a regular basis this spring. The Lower drifts have been vacant, and I have been spending a lot of my days down there recently. The entire river is fishing well. Still, no big hatches.. the PMDs sputter just about every day. Soon, they should really start to go off. If this happens, there will be fish looking up in certain spots. Stoneflies are moving around a bunch right now too. The next warm streak of weather we get will be exciting.. The Pit, Upper Sac and McCloud are all going to fire up here soon. General Trout opener is only two weeks away now - Expect some really good fishing on the smaller streams soon. May and June...

Last Minute Openings

The Lower Sac is just about as good as it gets right now. The flows have dropped back down from 20k to 7ish.. The weather has been perfect and the fishing has been outrageous, most days. The extended forecast is calling for more 70 Degree weather. A lot of different bugs are catching fish right now and as the flows continue to subside, the fish are spreading out a lot more. Expect more great things in the coming week on this river. I have this coming Thursday and Friday open. Call, text or email to book a day while conditions are prime. Check out more photos by clicking the image below ...

20K

The River is up to 20,000 cubes coming out of Keswick. A lot of that dirty water from Spring Creek has been flushed out and the Lower Sac is getting it's groove back. The fish are settling into their new homes in the swollen river. The forecast is calling for a lot more 70 degree weather. You can expect the bugs to be back out and the trout back to consuming.. We've been finding some big fish recently. Check out more from the river here. There are still some open dates: March 28-29, April 1, 6-7, 12-13.  ...

Coming up for Air..

I'm finally back from a 15 day stint running down winter Steelhead. After 5 weeks of rivers being outside of their banks and puking brown, they finally started to simmer and turn green. It was game on. Every single client that made the trip over this Winter got to hold at least one Wild winter steelhead. Some got to hold many more than that.. We had one hell of a time. You can scroll through some more images from the past couple weeks here.   It's back to trout fishing on the Lower Sac. Word on the street is that the little Spring Caddis and PMDs have already started to make an appearance. With warm weather in the forecast, these hatches should keep getting stronger. If you haven't booked your spring trip...

Rain, rain, rain..

So, it turns out El Niño is the real deal. The series of storms we've had have been pretty relentless. Most of the Steelhead rivers in Northern CA have only had a few days of fishable water this month. Even the Trinity has been blown most of January. It looks like we're expecting another couple of inches of rain in the next two days that will likely render the Trinity out of commission again. As our Winter Steelhead fishing opportunities have suffered, we've had some above average trout fishing happening on the Lower Sac. The Sac has stayed green and fishable throughout most of the storms. If you are jonesin' to catch some steelhead sized trout, I can't think of a better option in the State than the Lower Sac. As...

Trout Camp – 2016

I will be hosting “Trophy Trout camp” this coming summer up on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska. August is prime time for targeting some of the biggest trout in the world on the mighty Kenai River. We will be fishing with Lee Kuepper of Double Haul Fly Fishing (Kenai River Fly Fishing Guide) and his staff of top shelf guides. We will also be spending a day walking and wading some of the smaller tributaries for rainbow trout, char and arctic grayling. This is your opportunity to experience some of the best fly fishing that the world has to offer in one of most breathtaking landscapes at a very affordable rate. The majority of lodges in Alaska offer these fishing packages at upwards of $10,000 per person. This package is designed...

Northern California Fly Fishing Report

I think "el nino" has arrived. We got pounded with precipitation up here the past few days. Snow down to 2,000 ft. Cold. Wet. Awesome. The current river conditions on the Lower Sac remain great. We've had some very good winter fishing this month on the Sac. This is the time of year when we catch trout that barely fit in the net. The main draw has been the steelhead fishing. Both the Trinity and Klamath have kicked out some bomber days over the past few months. Now that we have some some substantial precip, flows will be up and down over the next couple of months. As many of you know, timing is a big part of steelhead fishing. Catching one of these rivers clearing and on the drop; you...
