The Lower Sac

As of today, The Lower Sac is flowing at 13,000 cubes and is green with just about 3 feet of vis. The flows have fluctuated quite a bit in the past month from 5k-30k. Amazingly, the fishing has remained excellent through all of that. Despite the lack of bugs hatching, the fish have been chowing and are in great shape. There are a few caddis, random mayflies, stoneflies and sallies around but very few bugs compared to what we're used to in April and May. Those massive PMD hatches were non-existent this Spring. It is pretty amazing to see that our fishery is in as good of shape as it currently is, considering how rough the winter conditions were. As the weather keeps getting warm, you can expect to see...

She’s back, Jack

The Lower Sac has been back in action since the beginning of April. The flows have jumped from 10k up to 25k in the past few days. Surprisingly though, that spike hasn't slowed the fishing at all. 25K cubes is a big, rip roaring river but it is still very fishable. We're still waiting on the big spring hatches of bugs.. our fingers are crossed that they didn't all get flushed when the river was up at 90k in January. It's certainly an unusual spring with the big flows, dirty water and lack of hatches - the only thing that's not a surprise is that the trout fishing is good. I just had this coming Tuesday (4/18) and Friday (4/21) cancel. As of now these are my only open days until...

Brown Water Blues

Winter Steelhead season is about wrapped up in my book. We have had only a few windows to get after the fish we look forward to all year. Green water has been quite elusive since Christmas - BUT even with that, there have been some very good windows. Chasing Winter fish is always a gamble - weather, water conditions, migrating fish that may or may not even be there. These are the simple reasons it is so gratifying when it happens. This shit is not for the thin skinned. For those of you who rolled the dice with me this year, Thank you. As most of you have seen - the rewards can be tremendous.  CHECKOUT MORE FROM THE WINTER SEASON HERE Whats on the Horizon? Well, there is some good news (FINALLY)...

Update

The Sac is currently flowing at 26,000 cubes and is still brown with less than a foot of vis. We are really hoping the clarity comes back soon. When it does - the fishing should be very good at these higher flows. Anything below 30k will be fishable if the visibility is decent. We are expecting a good spring season with the bigger flows. Stay tuned.  Steelhead The Windows have been very small and short lived this Winter. Relentless storms have kept our rivers big and dirty for most of the late Fall and early Winter seasons. When the rivers have had the time to turn green we have found some impressive fish. The inland rivers (Klamath/Trinity) have been teetering on slow to decent depending on the day. Most days you're averaging...

Atmospheric River – Update

We have been getting walloped with rain this winter.  This is great for the fish and the drought situation but it causes us guides to have to cancel and reschedule quite a few trips. The double edged sword.  The Lower Sac is currently at 30k cubes coming out of Keswick. Yes, the river is big - don't try to wade it right now.. As the rains slow down this Weekend the river should start to clear and should be back into fishable shape by the middle of next week. Don't be too frightened by the big water.. Big flows on the Sac can make for some pretty stellar trout fishing. As long as we have a few feet of visibility, fishing should be good next week. Most of the Trinity should...

The Sac goes Big.

The Lower Sac is on her way up to 20k cubes by tomorrow afternoon. The combination of big flows and winter is usually the perfect recipe for running into some of the biggest fish in the river. Starting on Thursday, the sun is supposed to come out and stay there until early next week. Due to our steelhead venues blowing out from the current deluge; I have this coming Friday through Monday open. You'd be hard pressed to find a better fishing option in the North State in the coming days than the LOWER SAC. Come up and get some. It will most likely take at least a week or so for our Steelhead rivers to turn green and drop back to fishable shape. Stay tuned for when that happens. ...

Lower Sacramento Fly Fishing Report

The Sac is currently sitting at 5k Cubes and flowing green. We've had some very good days out there recently for winter standards. Fish are more concentrated in their winter spots and eating a pretty diverse menu of bugs. Midges, Baetis, PMDs, Caddis, Stones and the round fly are catching quality fish right now. More than anything it's about putting it in the right spot.. they don't really like to move very far to eat your fly this time of year. There have been some big fish bending the rods recently. Expect more of the same for the coming weeks. Checkout more from the river here. GIFT CERTIFICATES ARE AVAILABLE!!! I was able to spend a little vacation time down in the Bayous and Marshlands of Louisiana last month with two of my...

The Lower Sac

Lower Sacramento River   The Sac is currently flowing at 5,000 cubes out of Keswick. Per usual for wintertime flows. Due to the lack of Salmon in the river we had an abbreviated "egg drop" compared to years past. Even with the lack of salmon spawning we still had very good trout fishing on the river. You can checkout some of the evidence here. Variety has been on the menu recently.. Big bugs, ity-bity bugs, and eggs have all been catching fish. Each day has been a little different so getting creative and changing your depths, weight, and flies will be important. Fish have certainly moved into their winter holding spots. There will be a small, steady flow of Winter Salmon into the river in the coming months so fishing the egg in certain spots...

Fall Fishing Report

Lower Sac- Well, the presence of spawning Salmon is pretty much non-existent this Fall on the Sac. The Egg drop never quite happened. Pretty sad to see dozens and dozens of empty spawning redds. Even with the lack of Spawning salmon, we have had some good to very good fishing most days. If you show up expecting to catch a bunch of fish in shallow water behind Kings - you may have been disappointed. We have been catching most of our fish on bugs.. in the redds and in bug water. Some days it's been caddis and some days its been little baetis and mayflies. Like I said, even with the absence of spawning Salmon we have still managed to have some very good days out there. Trinity and Klamath- It...
