Spring on the Lower Sacramento River

Springtime, specifically March and April is one of the best times of the year to be fishing the Lower Sacramento River. Currently, the spring Caddis have been coming off good during the warmer days, joined by a smorgasbord of other bugs, Mayflies and Midges included. Low water conditions coupled with abundant hatches of aquatic insects is a recipe for some truly amazing trout fishing. Most people think fishing under an indicator is the ONLY way to get 'em on the Lower Sac.. well this isn't necessarily the truth in the spring time. For you dry fly junkies, big spring hatches can provide good windows for throwing the floating bug. I am expecting one awesome spring fishing season here on the Lower Sac. My Spring calendar isn't completely filled in yet,...

Intersecting a Migration.

We'd been watching flow charts and weather forecasts for two months. We knew they were out there still, breathing salt, pissed off, waiting for freshwater. A storm finally showed up, raising a specific coastal river enough to allow these wild fish to charge upstream. We dropped everything and drove hundreds of miles in hopes of shaking hands with some of the most badass fish on the globe. We took a shot. We were rewarded.  ...

Go Fish.

I promised myself I was going to fish more this year. In the past couple of years I've allowed myself to get away from my personal fishing time a little too much. Things pop up more and more these days and it's easy to bail on a planned day off to fish. As much as I enjoy guiding, lets face it - Its a job and at times it can start to turn into a bit of a grind. I was reminded recently, by a few incidents that life is short and incredibly fragile. In the blink of an eye the rug can be pulled out from beneath your feet. A few weeks ago, I was told by an old timer;  "No matter how old or young you are, your...

Spring weather is here

We have had some crazy nice weather the past few weeks here in Northern California. Daytime temperatures in Redding have been in the mid-70's. The shorts and flip flops have been busted out and we've been spending days floating the Lower Sac with gobs of sunscreen on. The trout fishing has been very good some days and a bit tougher on others. I've found the best bite in the afternoon and usually lasting until dark.. so there hasn't been much of a need to get out there very early. The hatches have been pretty sparse during the past week - I think the bugs are a bit confused by this weather.  As badly as we need rain to fall, there's not much we can do about  it besides getting out...

Northern California Fishing Report

THE LOWER SACRAMENTO RIVER The Lower Sacramento River has been fishing WELL - especially considering the low (3,000 cfs) clear water conditions . There are some winter salmon on redds in certain spots of the river which has kept the egg on the menu along with midges and various mayflies. We've even seen some decent PMD hatches lately on the warmer days, which the trout have been all over. The little front that moved through late last week sparked a few days of excellent trout fishing. The lower floats below Anderson have continued to kick out at least a couple steelhead each float down there, along with plenty of trout. The best part about being out on the water recently is that there have been virtually NO OTHER BOATS on the...

December on the Sac

December has arrived and winter fly fishing is officially underway. Leafless trees, low flows, big trout and steelhead are what characterize our winter fishing here on the Sac. It's tough to beat solitude on a big empty river like the Lower Sac in the winter. These quiet, uncrowded conditions make for a very enjoyable day floating down this mighty river. I plan on spending most of my time this month on the Lower floats of the Sac searching for steelhead, trout and dry fly opportunities. The thing I love about this section of the Sac in December is the opportunity to catch trout, steelhead, and throw dry flies to rising trout all in the same day, while (most days) never seeing another drift boat. A few recent snapshots from the Lower...
