Update

Lower Sac We had some solid rain up here the past few days. Damn, it feels good to see the skies open up like this finally. It's been a long time coming. Flows from Keswick are down to 3,500 cubes (Which is nice and low) and expected to stay here for most of the winter. I was on the river for a few days recently with a couple of new anglers. The river fished very well for us over the course of the trip. Yes, the water is dirty still (2-3 ft visibility) but the fish are eating in the right spots. They even ate smaller bugs.. There are still a few salmon around and the redds that are fired up definitely have egg eating trout around them. It will be...

Louisiana Reds

I just got back from Louisiana a few days ago. Redfishin' with a couple of the boys I worked in AK with the past few years. It's a welcomed change of pace down there - much different than the freshwater game we play here in Northern California. Watching a Red chase down and kill your fly is bad ass to say the least.. Their vision isn't great so you can get fairly close to them, putting the fly right in their feeding lane is important. Once they see it and commit, they'll swim through a brick wall to put that thing in their gut. Their armor is tough - requiring an electric saw to get to their flesh when filleting them out. And they're delicious too. We ate Redfish just...

Lower Sac and Klamath Report

Lower Sac The Lower Sac is still kickin' out some good to great fishing (what's new..). Fish seem to be moving out of the redds a bit so don't be afraid to tie on a bug or two. Besides huevos, stoneflies and small dark attractors have been fooling em.. The water has been dirty for the past week or so. My best guess is that it's coming from the mud slide that happened up on Mt. Shasta back in September when a piece of glacier broke off (Check a video of the event here). I'm not sure how much longer it will last but the river remains very fishable. The big crowds of October seem to have moved on.. which is nice. KLAMATH RIVER The Klamath has a wad of fish in the...

No shortage of Goodness.

The past few weeks have been tough to beat. The Lower Sacramento River remains en fuego, The Klamath has a load of fish in the system this year AND we are finally getting some rain to fall on the thirsty ground of Northern California. I'm happy not be on the water today as it's blowing over 35 mph outside right now. I just finished up an awesome group trip with a few boys from Bozeman, Montana. I first fished these guys a few years back up at the Lodge in Alaska and convinced them last year to come out to Northern California to sample some of what we've got. They were blown away. They talked a few buddies into coming out with them this year and they crushed it again. It's...

North State Update

They might not be the biggest steelhead in the world, but there are a lot of them in the Klamath River system this year - and i've yet to see a fin clipped hatchery fish. There were a lot of cookie cutter steelhead put in the net the past few days.  If you don't have your winter steelhead dates reserved yet, get on it. This December and January should be very good up on the Klamath. Oh yea, the Lower Sac continues to produce stellar fishing.. The Sac

The Lower Sac is happening right now. The Kings are still slowly starting to cut redds and spawn. The spawn is definitely a little late this year compared to the previous few. This is most likely due to the higher than normal water temperatures. Eggs are catching fish throughout the river when put in the right spots. Little baetis and small caddis are gettin' em as well. With a delayed spawn for a lot of these Kings, November could be another great month to be on the Sac. Steelhead are lurking in the lower reaches.. If you're going to come up and fish this river in October, find yourself a local guide - somebody that knows whats going on out there. Your experience will be much more enjoyable. I've still got a few...

It’s Here

Fall has arrived. Fishing bumps to the status of "Good, Great, Grand, Wonderful." Put your favorite adjective there. It's happening on the Lower Sac right now. Big trout up in town, Steelhead lower down, dry flies, eggs - It's Fall.. We're getting some nice cool weather too, with an inch or so of rain expected tonight. Which is nice.. Due to the McCloud River blowing out, I've got this Friday and Saturday open for the Lower Sac. These are primo dates. ...

Open Dates

Fishing remains excellent on the Lower Sac. The salmon are starting to make their way into the spawning gravel up in town to cut redds. The egg drop is not far out from going off.  I just had a last minute cancelation for this coming weekend, September 26th-28th. This is PRIME TIME on the Lower Sacramento River for both trout and steelhead. If you've got some time free this weekend, jump on it.  ...
