December on the Sac
December has arrived and winter fly fishing is officially underway. Leafless trees, low flows, big trout and steelhead are what characterize our winter fishing here on the Sac. It’s tough to beat solitude on a big empty river like the Lower Sac in the winter. These quiet, uncrowded conditions make for a very enjoyable day floating down this mighty river. I plan on spending most of my time this month on the Lower floats of the Sac searching for steelhead, trout and dry fly opportunities. The thing I love about this section of the Sac in December is the opportunity to catch trout, steelhead, and throw dry flies to rising trout all in the same day, while (most days) never seeing another drift boat.
A few recent snapshots from the Lower river.
