Lower Sacramento River Fishing Report

Lower Sacramento River Fishing Report

The Lower Sac has had some ups and downs in the past week. In the past four days the flows have jumped from 7,000 cfs to 9,000 cfs. If you happen to be out on a “flow change” day the fishing can be tough. I was out on on Tuesday when the flows went from 8,000 to 9,000 at noon, sending debris and dirty water down the river. The mid morning bite was solid until early afternoon when the flows were bumped and the fishing slowed considerably. If the river stays steady for 24 hours the fish will settle down and get back into their feeding lanes. This week we have started to see good hatches of summer Caddis as well as some decent hatches of PMDs and even a few Golden Stones. The riffles have started to fish really well this week. Dropping anchor on a ledge/riffle and sending a few down has consistently produced fish. The flats have been fishing well but I have been finding the more consistent grab in the riffles. The weather has been warm (Mid-90’s!) and the forecast is calling for more of that through the weekend. NOW is a great time to be on the Lower Sac – but don’t forget your sunscreen!
